Interesting question. Although I agree that it's not necessarily true that cities NEED to grow (case in point - Cleveland's current down-sizing efforts), I don't agree with your final conclusion that the only people that benefit are business people.

The most notable example of benefits to others, is that with an increased population base, entire social and cultural movements become possible. For example, here in the region, Centre in the Square is only able to bring in larger, more interesting acts when there is sufficient population to support the event. Festivals are similar. Many arts and cultural initiatives and programs only become feasible at certain levels of population density. It's every member of the population in the Region that benefits from these arts initiatives.

On top of that, there are a number of core infrastructure opportunities that only become viable with increased density - public transit and foodbanks for example.

Yes - you personally may not make use of services and systems that I mentioned above, but I don't think it's valid to say that no one except business people benefit.

data is interesting, but on a related subject, my long standing question is- why do cities HAVE TO GROW. Why do I have to pay increased taxes, (excluding inflation), because the population has increased. The latest is that I have to pay for the proposed increase in police officers because our population has increased. What about this nonsense of increasing the number of councilors because of increased population. What about the water shortage. What about the additional damage to our roads. I can go on and on. To my way of thinking, the only people that benefit from increased population are the business people, to whom the politicians have very close contacts.

Thanks for the feedback. You're absolutely right on the fast & helpful on the press/PR side of things. Funny how that's often missed.

#8 is absolutely my favorite. The same goes in working with almost anyone (especially people the press). Always be the quickest, easiest, and most helpful to work with. It goes a long well.

Love this whole article man.

Glad it was useful - and best of luck in the fundraising! As you go through it, if anything in my post needs clarification, please let me know. Like I said, I don't claim to be an expert, but I'm happy to share anything I learned during the process.

Joseph, thank you for putting this list together! It is very detailed and fills the void you yourself hinted on regarding entrepreneurial experience with AngelList.
I have been following AngelList, since I began my startup earlier this year and it has evolved enormously.
Your list here will be a great help when I start fundraising in a couple of months.
